Mean Streak RMC Conversion Update #14: In Come the Headchoppers
One of the things that makes a great coaster in my opinion are headchoppers. Don't know what they are? Well, I'll let you know, but make sure you keep your hands down.
Headchoppers are structural near-miss elements coaster engineers incorporate into a coaster's layout to make it more exciting and thrilling. Headchoppers are designed to make you duck and/or put your arms down, or they can come as legchoppers (causing you to tuck your legs in), depending on the type of coaster you are riding. They are designed to make you feel as if you are about to hit something. Headchoppers are most commonly featured on Bolliger and Mabillard Wing Coasters, such as GateKeeper at Cedar Point, Thunderbird at Holiday World, and X-Flight at Six Flags Great America, all of which also feature legchoppers. As I said, headchoppers can make a great coaster even better. Ever since rumors swirled about the possibility of Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC) working with Cedar Point, I had wanted RMC to transform Mean Streak, the park's wooden coaster, into a hybrid coaster that featured headchoppers by having its layout go through its own wooden structure, and, luckily, it's gonna happen. You can see (if you look closely) in the photos below that Mean Streak, now currently being converted into a hybrid coaster by RMC, is now having work done on the post-mid-course brake run section of its layout. Steel ledgers used to support steel RMC track can be seen inside of the support structure (which is for sure to create some headchoppers) and outside of it. You can see ledgers forming the exit of the former mid-course break run and a double up that leads into an unknown element.
